What is Wellness?

What is Wellness?

May 14, 2019

The most common question I hear about Attune is, why Atlanta? Well, I was born, raised and went to college in the South. After producing 75+ events in Los Angeles, I was ready to expand into a market that was ripe and ready for the Attune experience. Being raised in the South, I felt called to share the wisdom and teachings from many great leaders in the wellness space to support increased awareness and support on the path to optimum health, inside + out. My intention is to make a radical impact and elevate humanity through the vehicle that is Attune. When I was introduced to Serenbe, I fell in love with the location that is immersed in Nature in the South. I knew it was a unique space that would hold a nourishing container, with refined amenities, to support an exquisite experience for those in the southeast, and globally.

As I’ve gone deep exploring my decision to return to my original home with Attune, I’ve been reviewing my wellness journey – specifically what it looked like during my early years in the south. And let me tell you, it looked a lot different.

While I’m the same person in many ways – my essence is the same – my relationship to wellness is drastically different than what it was during my childhood and early adult life. Not only have my food choices, exercise habits and lifestyle shifted, but my sense of autonomy, empowerment and trust in my intuition has been honed and cultivated deeply.

As I continue to scroll through my upbringing in the South I pinpointed the period of time when I began pivoting away from trying to please my family, and doing what I thought I was “supposed to do,” to following my instincts and passions. While I chose to stay in Alabama for university, I felt a strong pull to wander in the summers, and followed that urge. One summer I lived in Colorado - another I lived in the Virgin Islands – and when the opportunity came to study abroad in Italy I jumped on it. I thrived on pushing myself out of my comfort zone, as I felt exhilarated by the growth and sense of evolvement it fostered.

Continuing on this path, I developed an ever-intensifying dedication to honor the inner voice that tells me what my deepest truths and desires are. I learned the courage it takes to allow our authentic truth - our soul - to come through and take the lead. It felt so foreign, but so right. And it does not lead me astray.

In 2012, I experienced a "health scare" and my life shifted 180° as I chose to honor my body and listen to what it needed versus have surgery to remove my ovary. And who knows what else had I gone that route? Once I gave my body the space to detoxify and heal, it returned to a place of balance. It took dedication and work but it was worth every step of the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our body is wise beyond measure. It remembers everything and it guides us moment to moment. We simply need to slow down and tune in. If we are in pain, have inflammation or dis-ease has emerged, these are all messengers. What is out of balance? What is your body telling you? Another way the body speaks is with cravings. If we are yearning for a food, we must pause to think how it is going to make you feel after eating it. For me, greens, juice and fruit make me feel A L I V E. Those are the foods I want to eat most. We must listen, learn and choose wisely to return to optimum health.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Wellness is a conscious choice every day. It is the holistic approach that significantly impacts your life. What foods are you eating? But also, what are the conversations you’re having? What music do you listen to? What are you watching on your screens? It all impacts your health in significant ways.

How do YOU define wellness for yourself?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What is wellness? What does it all mean? Here it goes from my heart to yours...

  • Wellness is a journey, not a destination. I don’t always make the best choices, but I make damn sure I learn from the mistakes.
  • Wellness is an experiment. When I hold on to this belief I find more enjoyment in testing various philosophies, foods, practices and more, and seeing how they work for me. I don’t always get positive results, but I always feel adventurous.
  • Wellness is baby steps. No one can be transformed overnight. It is absolutely okay for our steps towards enhanced wellness to be small and manageable. We don’t need to make drastic, rigid lifestyle changes to find wellness.
  • Wellness is a customized state. We all need to find our own brand of wellness and do that.
  • Wellness is being our authentic selves. When we’re not being our true selves anxiety, stress and dis-ease begin to show up.
  • Wellness is living our truth and existing on purpose. We were all put here for a reason. We all have beautiful gifts and messages to share and owe it to ourselves and the world to find our purpose, then live it. It can be a lonely path at times, especially if you (like me) go against what your family thinks is “normal” - but it is so worth it.

What are your definitions of wellness? What has your journey been with it? How can you make your steps into elevated wellness more potent? I encourage you to explore your relationship to wellness and allow your insights to guide your path forward into a more intuitive, vibrant and joyful life. You've got this.
